This has propelled us to write this article to summarise the training and certification paths available to SharePoint 2010 developers and administrators.

There are five different levels of SharePoint 2010 developer and administrator certifications:

  • Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS)
  • Microsoft Certified IT Professional or Microsoft Certified Professional Developer (MCITP/MCPD)
  • Microsoft Certified Master (MCM)
  • Microsoft Certified Architect (MCA)

MCTS: Microsoft Sharepoint 2010, Application Development

Who is it for?
Developers who works with Microsoft SharePoint 2010 to build web portals and integrate business applications.
What training should I take?
The recommended training course is the five day course M10175A: Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Application Development . This leads to exam 70-573.

MCTS: Microsoft SharePoint 2010, Configuring

Who is it for?
IT professionals who configure and deploy Microsoft SharePoint 2010.
What training should I take?
The recommended training is the five day course M10174A: Configuring and Administering Microsoft Sharepoint 2010 . This leads to exam 70-667.

MCITP: SharePoint Administrator 2010

Who is it for?
You must have completed MCTS SharePoint 2010 Configuration (see above), this certification builds on this knowledge.
What training should I take?
The recommended training is M10231A: Designing a Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Infrastructure (5 Days). This leads to exam 70-668.

MCPD: SharePoint Developer 2010

Who is it for?
You must have completed MCTS: SharePoint 2010 Application Development (see above), this certification builds on this knowledge.
What training should I take?
The recommended training is Designing and Developing Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Applications (5 days). This leads to exam 70-576.

MCM

Successful completion of this program demonstrates knowledge of SharePoint products and technologies at a deeper level than has ever been assessed before. Graduates of this program are recognized by Microsoft as the top SharePoint experts in the world. To be accepted into the MCM program, applicants must meet or exceed the prerequisites, which include:
1. A thorough understanding of Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 design and architecture.
2. A thorough understanding of Microsoft ASP.NET, Windows Server, Internet Information Services, and other core technologies related to SharePoint products and technologies.
3. The ability to speak, understand, and write fluent English.
4. The following experience:
o Hands-on experience via early adoption programs with Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010: installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and custom development
o Three or more years of hands-on experience with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007: installing, configuring, troubleshooting, and custom development
5. Candidates must have passed the following certification exams prior to applying to the MCM program:
. Exam 70-573: TS: Microsoft SharePoint 2010, Application Development
. Exam 70-576: PRO: Designing and Developing Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Applications
. Exam 70-667: TS: Microsoft SharePoint 2010, Configuring
. Exam 70-668: PRO: SharePoint 2010, Administrator
