Overview

This 3-day, hands-on course is taught by industry recognized experts with the Sparx EA tool as it is used for business analysis. This course is an introduction to model-driven systems analysis using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) and Sparx Systems Enterprise Architect (EA). You will apply systems analysis principles in developing a comprehensive model of a solution to the class problem, using a modern development tool. This course is informed by the Business Analysis Body of Knowledge (BABOK), offering a means to incorporate UML modeling techniques into the business analysis process. This course is applicable to business analysts in all domains and while it is not dependent upon a specific process or methodology, a high level development methodology that answers the questions “what do I do first?” and “what do I do next?” is presented. The methodology begins with the presentation of a desired capability and leads you through the performance of activities and the creation of work products to support requirements definition, architecture description and requirements analysis.

Skills Gained

This course explores the use of Sparx Enterprise Architect (EA) to create models relevant to business analysts and architects. You will gain sufficient knowledge start using the language and the tool to improve your productivity while developing higher quality work products. Attendees will be able to read and understand the UML models being developed and start using the UML as a visual design tool. Wherever possible the course uses student company process and project information for examples and exercises to make the material as relevant as possible.

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify the fifteen UML diagrams
  • Describe the use of each of the UML diagrams and identify which of them should be used in their problem or project context
  • Follow a methodology to produce a business model in a modeling tool
  • Use EA to model system behavior using an activity diagram
  • Use EA to model system behavior using a sequence diagram
  • Use EA to model requirements using a requirements diagram
  • Use EA to model requirements using a use case diagram
  • Use EA to capture use case descriptions as structured scenarios
  • Use EA to model structure using class diagrams
  • Use EA to relate behavior to structure in a model
  • Use EA to prepare model views and reports
