Course Outline

Day 1 (Before morning break)

  • Introductions and individual objectives for the course
  • Discussion to understand the role of a manager and identify the traits of poor managers and their impact
  • Identify the different roles managers may need to undertake

Day 1 (After morning break)

  • The distinction between management and leadership and the difference between transactional and transformational leadership
  • Understand different management styles including the four management styles
  • How to work more effectively with other managers or departments

Day 1 (After lunch)

  • Exercises to identify what sort of decisions you may need to make as a leader
  • Understand the four typical reactions to having to make a decision and the impact of each of these reactions

Day 1 (After afternoon break)

  • Identify the benefits of effective delegation and the barriers to delegating effectively
  • Develop understanding of core motivational theories
  • What practical activities could you carry out to motivate your team and what have you tried before?

Day 2 (Before morning break)

  • Understanding modern performance management
  • Setting SMART objectives

Day 2 (After morning break)

  • Delivering motivational and developmental feedback
  • Understanding your own style of giving feedback and the impact on its success

Day 2 (Afternoon)

  • 'Real play' session with actors - an opportunity to work with our professional actors to solve an issue which is causing difficulty or anxiety - with feedback, hints and tips and clear action planning
  • Review, action planning session, suggested further learning and close.
